Is fishing just a ‘blood sport’?

January 21st, 2010 . by AB Kinney

Okay. I am a Montana girl, born and raised and I have been a fan of fishing all my life. When I moved out to the tri-state area for a job after college, I got into some casual discussions with my boss about outdoors activities. Eventually we got on to fishing, and he told me he thinks it’s barbaric and no more than a "blood sport". This seems like a pretty typical response from someone who has never fished a day in his life, nor does he understand the fundamentals of fishing to make such a statement, and so it really bothered me. I don’t feel like anyone should pass judgment on anything if they don’t have a thorough knowledge of it.

I was raised to believe that (as long as you were using the proper hook and knew what you were doing) there really isn’t any harm to the fish unless you don’t release it and actually fry it up. I also have never seen any ‘blood’ when removing hooks from the fish, and the fish doesn’t seem fazed one way or the other as long as it’s released quickly. (I typically don’t catch and release; I prefer to eat my trout.)

Anyways, what do you think about fishing? Is it really a savage blood sport?
Bob, I ask myself that same question every day. The good news is, I recently quit and am moving to Phoenix. There is a new airline that flies direct between Phoenix and Missoula for only $63! Someday if I can find a decent job, I will move back to MT. Unfortunately, teachers don’t make much money in MT.

Oh lord no… I’da probably got in trouble and nearly lost my job if a boss ever told me that…

I just saw something in an outdoor life magazine that scientists have found that the area of the brain that interprets pain is very poorly developed in fish (not sure which issue… i think it’s somewhat recent, though…)I’m not saying they don’t feel pain, just that they don’t feel pain like we do.

And as far as keeping fish for dinner, not nearly as bad as the commercial meat industry.

So not only is fishing kinder than beef, it also strengthens the bond between ourselves and our natural environment, leading to a greater appreciation for the great outdoors and all the members of the community of Life. Fosters good stewardship of natural resources, awareness of issues up to and including various legislative actions affecting one’s area…

Fishing does nothing but make us better people.

1 tsp grated ginger
1 lime zested then sliced thin,
sprig of fresh coriander, chopped
2tablespoons coconut cream
juice of 1 lime extra

mix the chili, lime zest and coriander and place inside the stomach cavity of the fish.
place fish on bakining tray .
place slices of lime on top in decorative pattern and sprinkle over the fresh lime juice and coconut cream then cover with foil.
bake in moderate oven for 45 min – 1 hr depending on size of fish.
when done the fish should lift easily from the bones and be flaky to serve just sprinkle a bit more lime zest and juice over the fish and add a sprig of fresh coriander as garnish .

how many trout? brain teaser answer?

January 3rd, 2010 . by AB Kinney

Bill Henderson who finds fishing the ultimate sport when relaxing, had the good fortune to inherit some beautiful property in Montana, which included the state’s fourth largest lake. The only problem was that the lake had been fished out, (i.e. a trout population of zero) and needed to be restocked. But Bill had a plan: he would buy 200 mature trout, and wait until the population was large enough to support 20 fishermen catching a limit of five fish every day.

Bill’s brother, who was a marine biologist, told him he could expect the trout population to double every six months. Calculate how long Bill will have to wait before he can open his lake up to fishermen, assuming Bill wants the trout population to stay constant once the fishing begins. Also, at the same time fishing begins, how many trout will be in the lake?

Why do they tag paddle fish?

December 15th, 2009 . by AB Kinney

Here is a link to Montana paddle fishing rules…
http://fwp.mt.gov/fishing/paddlefish.html

Here is a PDF of FAQ:
http://fwp.mt.gov/content/getItem.aspx?id=38081

My questions are:

What is this about tagging? You have to buy a tag to fish for them? Or is it that – you find a tag on the fish when you catch them?

Are most of them supposed to be tagged? Who tags them? And why?

There’s a question/answer on the PDF that says:
"Q: Where do you tag a fish you want to keep?
A: Cut a small hole in the dorsal fin and insert the metal loop portion through the hole and seal
tag. The self-locking tag must be completely sealed so it cannot be reopened. Tags are not
replaceable so be careful not to seal your tag before you are ready to place it on a fish."
—Does this mean, you can tag your own fish, then release him?

Does this tagging method have some sort of radar or satellite tracking? You can monitor their movement?

I remember once, I was trout fishing and a boat of guys in a nearby college in Grand Isle were asking if we had any fish they could tag.
Somehow they were monitoring the fish with the tide… But I don’t think that’s of much help in rivers, right?

How come in this video,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TQAupcJVgw
(after they beach the carp) the girl pulls in a paddle fish or 2… And they’re just like eh… And throw them on the ground.

Shouldn’t they be throwing them back? or tagging them? At first, my thoughts were "Oh this is cool I want to do it" but it looks more complicated than it really is… So I thought I’d get some good answers.

Thanks guys.

You have to have not only a Montana fishing license, but also a special paddlefish tag. The season is May 15 to June 30. Not everybody who wants a tag gets one.

And yes, sometimes paddlefish are given a tag, especially when they are stocked into an area, to see how far they disperse and move around.

i have used spinners, artificial worms and anything else you can think of to catch fish in Montana. just check the rules before you fish. quite a few streams are artificial lure only.
