Im trying to get there reasonably fast and hoping to not spend too much money. I really don’t want to drive the whole way. Are there any alternatives that are not too expensive? Train? Bus?

Fast and Cheap are usually not synonyms
I know for a fact that Amtrak stops at West Glacier on it’s way from Chicago to Portland /Seattle
So if you could intercept Amtrak at place like Portage WI it could work .
Milwaukee and Glenview IL would also be an option

Realitically 1200 miles is a 1.5 day trip not the 20 hours that mapquest erroneously suggested
and it usually gets broken into 400+ an 800mile day

I’m really confused. I only know that I am going to take NJ Transit first, but where do i exchange trains? How do I do this?

Yes. Amtrak makes 12 stops in Montana.

You’d start by taking Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited from New York City to Chicago. In Chicago, you’d change trains and take Amtrak’s Empire Builder to Montana. The trip will take several days, but should be enjoyable.

Is there anyone that can give me any information on Montana especially the Havre Montana area. I am going there on a nursing travel assignment. Just wondering what to expect.

By the way, the high school teams are called the "blue ponys" – When I was a kid I was told that it was becasue it got so cold in Havre that the horses turned blue. I don’t know if that’s the real reason though – because I’ve never been there in the winter.
