I have struggled with race issues all my life because I’m mixed with European and Cherokee ancestry. If someone tries to judge me for my or my dad’s family’s skin color, I chalk it up to ignorance. My grandmother was very dark skinned and endured a lot of racism, but most of her childrens spouses were of European descent.
What I find strange … What I find strange is “white” really isn’t a skin color. They are anyone with ancestors originating from Europe, Middle East, and North Africa. For instance, Italians, Spaniards, Arabs, and other darker skin people are considered being of the white race. My Italian husband, who’s grandmother was from Sicily, has darker skin than my Cherokee father. But on federal census, my husband writes “white” while my dad wrote “American Indian. Mexican Americans can choose white or Hispanic.
