How do you make a model/minature tepee used by the Plains Indians?
December 15th, 2009 . by AB KinneyI really need this answer to be correct, because this is for my sister’s project. The model tepee has to fit in a shoe box. Thanx!:)

make the frame from thin wooden dowels….6 or so, if i remember correctly. the covering is a truncated triangle with a smaller triangle, upside down, like a 7, at one side on the top. there is a pocket in the outer corner of the small triangle.a long thin pole fits into the pocket, other end on the ground. this pole is used to open & close the smoke flap.. tie the dowels at the top, spread them in a circle at the bottom. the fabric has to extend from the ‘ground’ to where the dowels are tied, about 1/4 of the length of the dowels from the top. it wraps around the wooden frame and is laced or pinned with wooden pegs. the door opening is usually simply made by lifting up the corner of the cover a bit, and tying it back. to close the door, just untie and let it fall back into place. i wish i could draw you a diagram, it would be much easier. best of luck.

i spent several summers in tipis, and helped put one up. but it’s still difficult to verbally explain . think a large paper cup, cut up one side , cut off the rim. cut the smoke flap. wrap it around the pole frame.
