March 14th, 2010 . by AB KinneyIs fishing just a ‘blood sport’?
January 21st, 2010 . by AB KinneyOkay. I am a Montana girl, born and raised and I have been a fan of fishing all my life. When I moved out to the tri-state area for a job after college, I got into some casual discussions with my boss about outdoors activities. Eventually we got on to fishing, and he told me he thinks it’s barbaric and no more than a "blood sport". This seems like a pretty typical response from someone who has never fished a day in his life, nor does he understand the fundamentals of fishing to make such a statement, and so it really bothered me. I don’t feel like anyone should pass judgment on anything if they don’t have a thorough knowledge of it.
I was raised to believe that (as long as you were using the proper hook and knew what you were doing) there really isn’t any harm to the fish unless you don’t release it and actually fry it up. I also have never seen any ‘blood’ when removing hooks from the fish, and the fish doesn’t seem fazed one way or the other as long as it’s released quickly. (I typically don’t catch and release; I prefer to eat my trout.)
Anyways, what do you think about fishing? Is it really a savage blood sport?
Bob, I ask myself that same question every day. The good news is, I recently quit and am moving to Phoenix. There is a new airline that flies direct between Phoenix and Missoula for only $63! Someday if I can find a decent job, I will move back to MT. Unfortunately, teachers don’t make much money in MT.
Oh lord no… I’da probably got in trouble and nearly lost my job if a boss ever told me that…
I just saw something in an outdoor life magazine that scientists have found that the area of the brain that interprets pain is very poorly developed in fish (not sure which issue… i think it’s somewhat recent, though…)I’m not saying they don’t feel pain, just that they don’t feel pain like we do.
And as far as keeping fish for dinner, not nearly as bad as the commercial meat industry.
So not only is fishing kinder than beef, it also strengthens the bond between ourselves and our natural environment, leading to a greater appreciation for the great outdoors and all the members of the community of Life. Fosters good stewardship of natural resources, awareness of issues up to and including various legislative actions affecting one’s area…
Fishing does nothing but make us better people.
What would you do if you went to Montana for a vacation?

Probably nothing much to do in Montana.
I’d go see some scenery.
What is the best way to travel to Glacier National Park in Montana from Houston, Texas?
January 21st, 2010 . by AB KinneyIm trying to get there reasonably fast and hoping to not spend too much money. I really don’t want to drive the whole way. Are there any alternatives that are not too expensive? Train? Bus?
Fast and Cheap are usually not synonyms
I know for a fact that Amtrak stops at West Glacier on it’s way from Chicago to Portland /Seattle
So if you could intercept Amtrak at place like Portage WI it could work .
Milwaukee and Glenview IL would also be an option

http://www.mapquest.com/maps?1c=Houston&1s=TX&2c=Portage+&2s=WI
Realitically 1200 miles is a 1.5 day trip not the 20 hours that mapquest erroneously suggested
and it usually gets broken into 400+ an 800mile day
OK here’s Greyhounds fare from Madison WI
For my money I take the train
Safe trip

Would like to Visit Montana?
January 21st, 2010 . by AB KinneyI would like to visit Montana for a week on a budget, can anyone give me any tips. ie. where to go in Montana to get away from everyday life etc. I don’t drive, would that be a problem? Any suggestion would be welcome, thanks!
Glacier will be your best bet as they have the red buses that escort people around, but it’s truly a serene and beautiful place, you can also go by boat to the peace parks area so if you stick with a tour you should be able to skirt the no driving thing easily enough!
And yes, there are cowboys here, as well as first people (Native Americans) there are teepees and horse backrides too. I just have to giggle at the poster who said that . Too bad the pony express quit running years ago ![]()
Here are some links for you to take a look at

I also believe there is a shuttle from the airport to the lodges! or you can go by train!
How should I cook frozen fish? I have whole fish bodies (cleaned)?
January 14th, 2010 . by AB KinneyThey are some type of salmon/trout cross caught in Montana. They have been cleaned (gutted) but still have the skins and heads attatched.
why not try a thai style??
1 small chili, fine chopped seeds remved.
1 tsp grated ginger
1 lime zested then sliced thin,
sprig of fresh coriander, chopped
2tablespoons coconut cream
juice of 1 lime extra
mix the chili, lime zest and coriander and place inside the stomach cavity of the fish.
place fish on bakining tray .
place slices of lime on top in decorative pattern and sprinkle over the fresh lime juice and coconut cream then cover with foil.
bake in moderate oven for 45 min – 1 hr depending on size of fish.
when done the fish should lift easily from the bones and be flaky to serve just sprinkle a bit more lime zest and juice over the fish and add a sprig of fresh coriander as garnish .

Is it possible to travel from NJ to Montana by train? How, I need help?
January 14th, 2010 . by AB KinneyI’m really confused. I only know that I am going to take NJ Transit first, but where do i exchange trains? How do I do this?
thanks
Yes. Amtrak makes 12 stops in Montana.
You’d start by taking Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited from New York City to Chicago. In Chicago, you’d change trains and take Amtrak’s Empire Builder to Montana. The trip will take several days, but should be enjoyable.
To learn more, here’s a link to Amtrak’s website:
http://www.amtrak.com
Depending upon where you are in New Jersey, you would likely use NJT to get into New York City.
